ENGLISH & AMERICAN CHAMPION COURTENAY FLEETFOOT OF PENNYWORTH 1963 Top Hound of the year (6,389 points) 8 BIS, 22 G 1st, 10 G 2, 3 G 3, 2 G 4. 1964 Dog of the Year (25,110 points) 21 BIS, 31 G 1st, 2 G 2, 1 G 3. 1965 Top Producing Hound of the year and fourth among all breeds. 1966 Top Producing Dog of the year (tied with Yorkshire Terrier). CH. LAGUNA LUCKY LAD Another strong sire of the fifties was an English import, owned by the Anderson's of Mardormere Kennels, Ch. Laguna Lucky Lad. He won BOB at Westminster three consecutive years and was Best Hound at the Garden in 1958. In fact in 1961, one of his daughters, Ch. Lucky Penny of Mardormere went BOS to her famous dad. Pity to think that the Mardormere Kennels were closed to outsiders. How much greater an influence they could have had on the breed as a whole. News of the sixties was easier to come by as most of the breeders and exhibitors are still active and more responsive to a sad cry of HELP. Probably the greatest whippet of that time was English and American Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth. Quoting from Peggy Newcombe, "For me to say we love him dearly is an understatement, for myself in particular, as I have traveled over 2 1 J-,000 miles by car with him and 6,000 by air, all of this while he was being shown, as after his first six months in the states, I never left his side." His total show record: 87 times shown, 76 BOB, 11 BOS, 5 1 i hound group firsts, 12 seconds, 3 thirds, 2 fourths, 29 BIS - a record that will be difficult is almost impossible to beat. In 1963 he was top hound of the year, 1964 DOG of the year, 1965 Top producing hound of the year and 1966 top producing dog of the year. He is still at stud by private contract. Pennyworth is a name that is familiar to all whippet fanciers of today. There is no doubt that "Ricky", Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth is the most renowned from the Pennyworth Kennels. Although he is an English import, Pennyworth is also noted for their consistently breeding American champions from crossing English and American bloodlines. Looking back into the pedigrees of many of the well known Pennyworth dogs we find the Stoney Meadows line rather strongly in the American bloodlines. Ch. Penny worth Would You Believe, himself a success in the show ring was recently named one of the top producing studs for 1970. "Woodie" is the grandson of Stoney Meadows Madrigal and Stoney Meadows Make Believe, two of our more important forerunners of the breed. I personally feel indebted to Peggy Newcombe as it was through a mutual friend, the late Henry J. Sayres, that I acquired three Pennyworth bitches. Polly, Tanja and Bugs entered our lives and our hearts and we became part of the hooked generation. I missed seeing Ch. Greenbrae Barn Dance on my last trip east as the day Mrs. Hodge invited me over for a "look", the state of Penn. was deluged by 4 1/2 inches of rain. Mrs. Hodge, Peg as she chooses to be called, was gracious enough to suggest she pick me up at the terrier show at noon to visit her kennels and personally select my photo of Barn Dance for this Yearbook. Unfortunately, she could not make her way to the show grounds as a bridge was washed out and I never did get my photo or the rest of my copy. I do know that "Barney", himself a specialty winner, is already the sire of 15 champions, including three whippet specialty winners.
CH. GREENBRAE BARN DANCE Am. and Can. Ch. Mor-Shor's Whirlaway, owned by Dianne Moore Horton, is another important factor of the sixties. Due to an accident, "Flame" retired early from the show ring. He finished his American Championship at only eight months and his Canadian Championship at 13 months. He is an inbred "Barney" son traceable back to the blending of the best of the Meander and Laguna bloodlines, as used by the Stoney Meadows Kennels. In fact, Ch. Stoney Meadows Imp of Satan proved to be a good producer for Mrs. Horton. Closing out the sixties is probably the whippet that I personally know the best of all the greats mentioned in this article. "Gridley", Ch. Stoney Meadows Royal Fortune, bred by Doris Wear, is now owned by Glen and Joan Frailey, who incidentally also own a top smooth fox terrier. Gridley will be remembered most by his admirers as the whippet who was retired on the day he received his 100th BOB. He had 58 group placements including 21 G 1 and was five times BIS at all breed shows. He took time out from siring 25 champion get to add a specialty win to his credit. In addition to being a great show dog and sire, Gridley to me is a champion enchilada eater and fellow traveler when he makes the rounds of shows to chaperone his "kids". Gridley was bred by Stoney Meadows Kennels and is the great grandson of Ch. Meander Bob White and Laguna Leonie. I close this article feeling more frustrated than when I started. It's like eating those Granny Goose potato chips; once you start you find it hard to stop. I feel I have just started to scratch the surface and wish I had more time to research further. I am especially grateful to Richard Reynolds for information on the Meander Kennels, Mrs. Doris Wear for Stoney Meadows copy and to Mrs. Peggy Newcombe for supplying information on Mardormere Kennels. As Rich Reynolds remarked when I discussed this project with him, "This should be a book, not an article". Who knows, perhaps this will lead to a more comprehensive study so all the other whippet breeders, exhibitors and fanciers who have had an impact on this great breed can be added. Time and space have limited this article to what is but it is hoped you have learned a little about the history of our American Whippets. I certainly have!
AM. & CAN. CH. MOR-SHOR'S WHIRLAWAY He was campaigned exclusively by Robert S. Forsyth, and in 5 1/2 months of showing, his record is as follows: 45 times shown as a Special he has 35 BOB's, 5 BOS's, 6 Group l's, 7 Group 2's, 7 Group 3's, and 4 Group 4's. He won the Hound Group at the Beverly Hills Show in California in 1967. He was Top Whippet in 1967. Won the Stud Dog Class at The Whippet Specialty in 1968 and 1969. INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION RINGMORE FINISTERRE "Finney" is an English Import sired by English Champion Bella Vista Barry. Winner of "Top Western Hound" for 1965 -Kennel Review Award Mary Robinson also won best non-professional handler award for that year. "Finney" was campaigned owner-handled all the way to Top Group Winning Whippet in the United States in 1965; in the Top Ten Hounds in the United States for 1964 and 1965; Best in Show Winner. Ch. Ringmore Finisterre is also the sire of group winning whippets. He was retired at the end of 1965. SAGA OF A WHIPPET OWNER'S SUCCESSFUL QUEST FOR NUMBER ONE WHIPPET IN THE UNITED STATES FOR 1970 Doctor "Pat" Baymiller and friends Many times the question has been asked "what is it like to own the #1 Whippet in the U.S. " or "what made you decide to try it" or at least ten different questions along the same line. In connection with the successful completion of 1970, a year that saw Champion Hollypark Honey Bee complete that year as number one Whippet in the U. S. , many exhibitors and breeders had a chance to meet and know Doctor Patrick Baymiller. There are many reasons people campaign dogs. To some people a dog is just a dog, some highly successful show dogs wouldn't recognize the interior of their owner's home if they saw it much less their owner, or at least if they do it is with little sign of affection. Of course, this type of show dog, evidently is a tremendous boon to the owner's ego, but one wonders about the lack of affection between dog and owner. Some dogs are campaigned in the hope of making a kennel name more prominent, or with the hope of making the get more valuable. There are also other numerous unadmirable reasons dogs are campaigned. Fortunately, in the Whippet realm it appears that the majority of whippets that have been "campaigned" because of affection for the breed and for the dog, for though most are shown with handlers, nevertheless the bond of affection is present, the pride in the breed is obvious, and a good many appear to be the house dog - if not the bed partner! At least such is the case of Doctor Pat Baymiller and Honey Bee. On more than one occasion Doctor Pat and his wife, Barbara, have been observed at the Whippet ring watching the judging not only with interest but with pleasure. Every person may think he would like to win every time, but the truth of the matter is that if one were to have a dog that won every time it would soon become boring -without competition there is no sport. Nevertheless, win, lose, or draw, the Baymillers have always been uncomplaining and, in fact, downright cheerful. Doctor Pat Baymiller has been observed at the Croup ring more than once applauding for the Whippet even if it not be his - not with a slight patting of the hands but with hearty applause for his breed in the ring. When it comes to support for a dog in group you get what you give. Because Doctor Baymiller has found it possible to give his support to others in the breed and to appraise other people's Whippets kindly it is interesting to note there has been reciprocation. The fellow who campaigns his dog and shares his pleasure with the other exhibitors on a friendly basis is the exhibitor one doesn't resent. In talking to Pat, as his friends know him, he is proud to be a third generation native Californian born to a real pioneer family. He has had pets of all kinds throughout his life including many that are considered strange to some - such as skunks, snakes and reptiles. It is only natural that he would take the exhibiting of dogs so seriously because he has engaged in competitive sports all of his life. First it was in athletics where he was one of the top half-milers and middle weight boxers in the state. Next it was homing pigeons which he bred and raced for 35 years. He is very proud to have bred and raced three National Champions and was voted All American loft four times. Pat's first experience exhibiting dogs began after he purchased two Pug bitches in 1956. He was too busy with his work to do very much showing but some of his pups did very well for others. Next came "Devil" a very fine White Bull Terrier. The first real serious dog showing began after the purchase of a young Miniature Schnauzer dog from Glenn Fancy, who was Pat's boyhood friend. This dog, Ch. Fancway's Gorgeous George, became a top dog in national competition, compiling 50 BOB, 30 group placements and 3 Terrier group firsts all in California competition. Many fine Schnauzers both Miniature and Standard have followed. It has been said that behind any successful man is a good woman. Barbara Baymiller is no exception. She is Doctor Pat's partner in love -also without her he would not have a groom or a kennel girl! Pat's interest in Whippets began with an admiration of Ch. Ringmore Finisterre whom his friend J. C. Carson was showing. He purchased his first Whippet in 1964 in co-ownership with Dorothy Carson and showed her to a championship. He really became"hooked" on the breed when after several years of searching, the Hastings showed him Honey Bee who really took him over. This seven week old puppy was to become everything he wanted in a dog - bed partner, companion, top show dog and hopefully good brood bitch. The doctor is a bird hunter and always wanted a dog to hunt with and one to curl up at his feet. So along came "Donny" a German Shorthaired Pointer. This dog was purchased as a gun dog but 'at 10 months won a 5 point major at the GSHP Specialty and his championship shortly afterwards. He has since been trained and hunts pheasants. It is only natural that Pat should choose Veterinary Medicine as his vocation since he realized at an early age that he enjoyed working with animals and was interested in any facet of biology or medicine. It is also interesting to note that the late dog judge, Chris Shuttleworth, had an important role to play in this selection because of his constant encouragement. Chris and Pat were very close friends ever since the early days of racing pigeons together. Doctor Baymiller is past president of his local Veterinary Society, the Bay Counties Veterinary Association, and currently on several state and national veterinary committees. He is past president of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Executive Council for Boy Scouts of America, the Century Club of the YMCA and treasurer of Drug Communications, Inc.
