Who Were The Best Race Whippets Of All-Time?

by Douglas J. Arthur

The amateur sport of Whippet racing conducted under the American whippet Club's official Rules and Regulations for National whippet Racing can be traced back to 1956. Since then many race whippets have competed and several have posted impressive records. Who was the best?

In studying the race results published in the Whippet News and Whippet News letter since 1956, there has been a steady increase in both the number of race meets as well as the total number of adult starters. In fact, many race meets in the late fifties and early sixties failed to attract twenty adult starters. This is quite a contrast when compared to the 1979 Santa Barbara races that drew a total entry of 77! Ten years ago in 1969, there were only 16 National point Race Meets in just five states and one province ( British Columbia). In 1979 there were 37 NPR's in ten states and one province ( British Columbia). This dramatic growth demonstrates the increasing popularity of amateur Whippet racing in this country.

There are many "opinions" expressed as to who the best race Whippets were. What separates the truly great Whippet racers from the many hundreds that have competed is sustained domination over a period of several years. Perhaps the most objective measure of performance would be the Award of Racing Merit (ARM) Point schedule:

A short resume of each of the top ten racers follows:

VAN OORSHOT'S TORO, ARM (Midst Du Pilier Rouge ex Ch. Van oorshot's Val O'Legendary) was bred by "Dutch" van oorshot and owned by Deanna Marten of California. "Toro" won 132 of 140 heats on the way to winning 33 of the 35 race meetings he entered. His only losses were to Featherstone's Mr. Lightfoot, C.D., ARM (1973-- Fresno) and

to Topper's Oh Golly Ms Molly, ARM (1974-- Fresno). This blue brindle and white particolor won a record six straight Santa Barbara race meetings from 1973 to 1978 de feating such top racers as Featherstone's Mr. Lightfoot, C.D., ARM, Epinard's Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM, PCC, F.Ch., Topper's oh Golly Ms Molly, ARM, Regalstock Willie Win, ARM, Regalstock Lord Weasel O'Topr, ARM, F.Ch., Epinard Canyon Creek Red Fox, ARM, Topper's Topping, ARM, Regalstock Panama Red, ARM and Knight Kap O'Lazebrook, ARM. Considered by many to be the top racer in America from 1973 to 1977, "Toro" had his best year in 1973 when he won a record ten National point Race meets, dominating California, running undefeated in Vancouver, B.C. and capturing a large field at Chagrin Falls, Ohio defeating the top midwest racer, Destructor, ARM.

VOLANT BIG RED MACHINE, ARM (Ch. Bettebrook Benchmark ex Satin Doll) was bred by Gene Helton and owned by Mary Kay and Frank Gluhm of Ohio. "Benchie" surprised the midwest in 1973 by winning her first adult race meet at the age of 10 months, defeating Destructor, ARM, Marial's Renfield phalarope, ARM, Cricket Hearth Chief Joesph, ARM and Ch. Marial's Traymatt Snow Man, C.D., ARM. This fawn bitch had her best year in 1974 when she won 7 of 8 race meets, losing only to Featherstone's Mr. Lightfoot, C.D., ARM (Burlington, Iowa). She competed in 20 exciting race meets with the great Knight Kap O'Lazebrook, ARM and was victorious in 12 of them. She is considered to be the greatest race bitch of all-time, and together with her litter brother, Volant Buckeye Express, ARM, formed the best brother-sister combination since Eyleland Hannah and Eyleland Homer raced in the mid-sixties. "Benchie" and Buckeye Express placed 1-2 at Islip, New York in 1977.

KNIGHT KAP O'LAZEBROOK, ARM (Ch. Pinetop's Opening Knight, ARM ex Love O'Lazebrook) was brad by Andrew Bidlingmaier and Anthony Gutilla and co-owned by David Henry and Anthony Gutilla of Ohio. "Kappy" is a red fawn and considered to be the best male racer ever to compete in the midwest, posting 20 career victories from 1975 to 1979. He defeated the great Volant Big Red Machine, ARM 8 times and posted wins over such exceptional racers as Volant Buckeye Express, ARM, Epinard's Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM, PCC, F.Ch., Slade's Edie Ann O'Lazebrook, ARM, Hallmark's Brindle Express, ARM, Volant Music Man, ARM, Can.Ch. Swiftsure Happy Daze, ARM, F.Ch., Volant Dream Weaver, ARM, Marial's Padneyhill Illusion, ARM, Slade's Red Kap, ARM, Power of Destiny, ARM and Ch. Marial's Mem phis, ARM. "Kappy" twice competed at Santa Barbara, placing second to Van Oorshot's Toro, ARM in 1978 and returned to win in 1979, defeating the top California racer, Regalstock Panama Red, ARM.

EPINARD'S SHELBY OF WYNDSOR, C.D., ARM, PCC, F.Ch. (Can.Ch. Emberson of Course, ARM ex Eyleland Hannah) was bred by Lynne Underwood and owned by Jean and Vince Balint of California. The "Iron Man" of Whippet racing, Shelby has probably competed in more national point race meetings than any other Whippet in history. This white with fawn markings had his best year in 1972 when he won 7 race meets, including Santa Barbara, Vancouver, B.C. and Chagrin Falls, Ohio where he defeated Riverdale's Charmaine, ARM and Renfield Lady O'Lazebrook, ARM. Although he ran in the shadow of Ch. Pinetop's Opening Knight, ARM in 1971 and Van Oorshot's Toro, ARM from 1973 on, Shelby did show to advantage on many occasions over such top racers as Heathcliff Basha, ARM, Legendary Knight Bright, ARM, Can.Ch. Renfield Temptress of Course, ARM, Topper's Joe Willie Machine, ARM, Can.Ch. Epinard's Sonny Jim of Course, ARM, Featherstone's Mr. Lightfoot, C.D., ARM, Regalstock Lord Weasel O'Topr, ARM, F.Ch., and Big Star Jet, ARM. At the age of six Shelby returned to the midwest in 1975 to place 3rd at St. Louis behind Knight Kap O'Lazebrook, ARM and Volant Buckeye Express, ARM.

VOLANT BUCKEYE EXPRESS, ARM (Ch. Bettebrook Benchmark ex Satin Doll) was bred and owned by Gene Helton of Ohio. "Woody" was a strongly built fawn male who teamed with his famous litter sister, Volant Big Red Machine, ARM, to form the most successful brother-sister act in the history of modern Whippet racing. Although he won only three race meets, "Woody" placed second and third numerous times behind his sister and Knight Kap O'Lazebrook, ARM but otherwise showed to advantage over other fine racers such as Marial's Renfield phalarope, ARM, Ch. Marial's Traymatt Snow

Man, C.D., ARM, Uruhu's Flying Fantasy, ARM, Limited Edition O'Lazebrook, ARM,Feather stone's First Edition, ARM, power of Destiny, ARM, Slades Edie Ann O'Lazebrook, ARM Myric's Commander, ARM, High Caliber O'Lazebrook, ARM, Hallmark Brindle Express, ARM, Hallmark Lord Sebastian, ARM, Morning Glory or Orchid, ARM, Patrick's Elation, ARM and Ch. Marial's Tinsel, ARM. In 1973 at the age of 11 months "Woody" placed third behind Toro and Shelby at Las Vegas.

CH. PINETOP'S OPENING KNIGHT, ARM (Ch. Madcap Timeless ex Ch. Madcap Stage Struck) was bred by Jeannette Keppelman and owned by Donna Valenti of California. "Topper" was a large fawn male who dominated west coast Whippet racing from 1968 to 1971. He twice won Santa Barbara, defeating the top Canadian racer, Can.Ch. Emberson of Course, ARM in 1969 and Epinard's Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM, PCC, F.Ch. in 1971. In 1968 "Topper" placed second at Santa Barbara to his great little rival, Am.Can. Ch. Sing'n Little Girl Blue and again placed second in 1970 to the unforgettable midwest race bitch, Scram Whisper, C.D., ARM. His 13 victories were posted over other fine racers such as Bardon Sara Lawrence, ARM, Whirlaway's Magnificent Lance, ARM, Urray Glory Be, Hollypark Gambling Man, Babuska of Hillcrest, ARM, Ch. Whirlaway's Apache, C.D., ARM, PCC, Crick-E-Sue's Almatheus, C.D., ARM and Change in Destiny, ARM. "Topper" made one trip to the midwest in 1969 and was defeated by Titan Hobo, ARM and Ch. Marial's Jellybean, C.D., ARM at the indoor Chicago International.

TOPPER'S TOPPING, ARM (Ch. Pinetop's Opening Knight, ARM ex Dixie Leigh's Quicksilver) was bred by Mary McGann and owned by Donna Valenti of California. "Spinner" is a red fawn male who has won his ten races on the west coast between 1977 and 1979. He defeated many exceptional racers including Epinard Canyon Creek Red Fox, ARM, Topper's Joe Willie Machine, ARM, Runner's Beau Geste, ARM, Darbe's Liberty Bell Windward, ARM, PCC, F.Ch., Haitu Zachary Amos, ARM, Ch. Silverado Sue of Sea Aire, ARM, Silverado Hi Ho Silver, ARM, Regalstock Lord Weasel O'Topr, ARM, Amberwood Regal- stock Voodoo, ARM, Regalstock Panama Red, ARM, Amberwood Maximillian, ARM, Amberwood Regalstock Cavallo, ARM, Regalstock Amberwood Dahlia, ARM and Fargo's Combo, ARM.

DESTRUCTOR, ARM (Strathoak Spring Intrigue, ARM ex Ch. Legend O'Lazeland) was bred by Louis Pegram and owned by Judy and Fred Tolley of Missouri. A fawn and white parti-color male, "Boots" had his best year in 1973 when he won five NPR's showing to advantage over such top racers as Brenda's Brandy, ARM, Brenda's Champagne, ARM, Antonio's Quicksilver, ARM, Marial's Renfield Phalarope, ARM, Ch. Marial's Traymatt Snow Man, C.D., ARM, He Ain't Country, ARM, Uruhu's Karma, ARM, Volant Fat Albert, ARM, Titan Cinnamon Tost, and Riverdale's Charmaine, ARM. In 1973 he placed second to the great van Oorshot's Toro, ARM at the Chagrin Falls, Ohio NPR and lost to Toro, Shelby and Buckeye Express at Las Vegas the same year.

EYLELAND HOMER (Stoney Meadows Epic ex Ch. Great Circle Hester) was bred by Barbara and Ralph Eyles and owned by Margaret and Victor Renner of Ohio. Together with his famous kennelmate, Ch. Rouget O'Lazeland, and his great litter sister, Eyleland Hannah, Homer dominated midwest Whippet racing in the mid-sixties. This fawn male posted wins over Rouget, Hannah, Ch. Eyleland Cinnamon Roll, Eyleland Peppermint Boy, Ch. Bettebrook Bonita, Grave Digger, Ch. Marial's War Paint, C.D., Rex Ringo, Titan Hobo, ARM, Heather Blue, Hasty Royal Red, and Strathoak Spring Intrigue, ARM. He placed second to White Acres Sage at the 1964 Santa Barbara races.

FEATHERSTONE'S MR. LIGHTFOOT, C.D., ARM (Ch. Martincrest Sadeye Jason ex Coventry's Firebird Jessica) was bred by Cathy and Gene Smith and owned by Sheryl Steckel of California . "Doogan" holds the unique distinction of being the only Whippet to defeat both Van Oorshot's Toro, ARM (1973-- Fresno) and Volant Big Red Machine, ARM (1974-- Burlington). This powerful fawn male won six race meets and placed second numerous times to Toro and Shelby. He competed in California, Nevada, British Columbia, Illinois and Iowa. His victories were over the likes of Toro, Big Red Machine, Crick-E-Sue's Almatheus, C.D., ARM., Can.Ch. Renfield Temptress of Course, ARM, Volant Buckeye Express, ARM, Regalstock Lord Weasel O'Topr, ARM, F.Ch., Marial's Renfield phalarope, ARM, Big Star Jet, ARM, Topper's Joe Willie Machine, ARM and Featherstone's First Edition, ARM.

I have been fortunate in being able to see the above ten athletes in actual competition and can attest to their greatness. Space does not permit mentioning the accomplishments of all the many fine race Whippets competing during the past 25 years. Several of the better pre-ARM (1956-66) racers were Ch. Whipoo's Whimsey, C.D., Eyleland peppermint Boy, Ch. Wingedfoot Dominic, Ch. Eyleland Cinnamon Roll, Ch. Rouget O'Lazeland, Eyleland Homer, Eyleland Hannah, White Acres Sage, Ringo's Ringo, Ch. White Acre's Carol's Fancy, Am.Can.Ch. Sonna Rockabye Baby, C.D., Hasty Royal Red, Ch. Hollypark Highland Fling, and Urray Chieftain. The Award of Racing Merit program introduced by Louis Pegram provides recognition of the better racers and has become an effective measure of a race dog's overall ability. Readers may wish to review the 95 winners of ARM Certificates to learn the names of the best racers since 1967.

Although there may be differences of opinion on who was the best, there can be no argument that there were many exceptional Whippets competing at National point Races during the past two and one-half decades. With many of our past racing greats now in the pedigrees of our present and future stars, Whippet racing in the 1980's promises to be equally exciting and competitive.

GROVENOR'S CHEMIN de FER, owned by Grovenor, and GROVENOR'S LA ROULETTE, owned by Pat Hoppe, Roberta Russ and Jerry Edwards. To the right - the Dorian's GROVENOR'S THE MASKED MARVEL ... they are BY PI.

We have some sound, gorgeous, fabulously pedigreed, zesty puppies of various ages available to loving show homes. If you have racing, coursing and/or obedience in mind, too, that's fine! The pups are really neat.

OUR STUD FORCE - all inbred and or linebred on the great immortals - CH. MORSHOR'S WHIRLAWAY, CH. BREENBRAE BARNDANCE and CH. COURTENAY FLEETFOOT OF PENNYWORTH - is represented in the pedigree section BY PI - GROVENOR'S PILLAR OF FIRE, who already has sired many outstanding contributions to the breed. PI is by PAWL - CH. GROVENOR'S BOLD 'N BRASSY. PAWL'S litter brother is PETER - GROVENOR'S FAME 'N FORTUNE... you'll be seeing more of their get as we breed their relatives back to them and as other people take note of the high quality that our males consistently produce.

PAWL * the sire and grandsire of champions * is 20 1/2" orange and black on white. While being shown on and off by my daughter or myself, Pawl over twenty-one times took breed and placed in group - going over the BIS whippets and top handlers in quite an area. Also exceptional, but given to lollygagging in the ring (laying down to scratch his back on the grass, etc.) is the great humorist PETER, 21 1/2" grey and fawn on white, who garnered quite a few good wins and points because of

his sterling qualities. Also at stud are PETER'S son DOOBEE, AM.&CAN. CH. GROVENOR'S SWIFT 'N SURE, 22" black and wheat on white (out of SEYBERNE'S HAPPINESS IS) and

PETER'S son, LONDON, 21 1/2" grey and fawn on white, who needs two singles to finish. Two of PAWL'S sons at stud are PI and HARRY * GROVENOR'S I'M WILD ABOUT HARRY, 21 1/2" orange on white with touches of black over his eyes. HARRY'S dam has Whirlaway, Fleetfoot and Bismark of Frisia. Also at stud are fine dogs like GROVENOR'S LIVING LEGEND (litter brother to CH. GROVENOR'S LIVING LEGACY) and THE MARVEL, above, out of STONELEIGH STAR OF GROVENOR - a BARNEY daughter. Inquiries invited on our dogs at stud and our puppies for sale.

(ch. whirlaway's apache, c.d., a.r.m., p.c.c. x ch. jano's artesian)

WE ARE ALL AWARE OF THE VERSATILITY OF THE WHIPPET ...... BUT IS THERE NO END ???? WE HAVE A "SPORT" AS YOU CAN SEE. THE "TORNADO" RUNS BOTH AS A SIGHT AND A SCENT HOUND.

FROM AGE THREE MONTHS HE HAS BEEN TAKEN ON "COON" HUNTS WITH COON DOGS AND HAS STAYED IN THERE WITH THE BEST OF THEM. EVEN GETTING CLOSER TO THE FURRY CRITTER BOTH IN TREES AND IN THE WATER, THAN HIS FELLOW HUNTERS. OFTEN TIMES HE HAS BECOME THE HUNTED BECAUSE HE OUTDISTANCED THE SCENT HOUNDS. I WONDER HOW I WOULD REGISTER A FAWN AND WHITE 26 POUND COON HOUND? S'POSE I'D HAVE SOME TROUBLE???

TORNADO WILL CHASE GAME WITH HEAD UP ON SIGHT AND WITH HEAD DOWN ON SCENT. HE IS GOING TO START HIS ARM CAREER IN THE SPRING AND TRY TO FOLLOW IN HIS FATHER'S FOOTSTEPS. IF HE GETS A C.D. BEHIND HIS NAME IT MAY NOT STAND FOR COMPANION DOG - IT JUST MIGHT STAND FOR COON DOG !!!

WITH THE YEAR COMING TO AN END, IT IS AGAIN TIME TO EVALUATE WHAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED AT ARIAMI.

  • WE HAVE BRED PUPPIES THAT HAVE FINISHED IN THE CONFORMATION RING.
  • WE HAVE PRODUCED A DUAL CHAMPION, CONFORMATION AND COURSING.
  • WE HAVE PRODUCED A FIELD CHAMPION WHO IS MORE THAN HALF WAY TO HIS L.C.M.
  • WE HAVE PRODUCED EIGHT CHAMPIONS IN ALL.
  • WE HAVE ESTABLISHED ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL, LINEBRED STUD FORCES IN THE NATION.

WE HAVE ESTABLISHED A GENE BANK THAT CAN BE DEPENDED ON. IT IS PROVEN .

  • WE HAVE SEVEN PUPPIES (VARIOUS AGES) WITH THE POTENTIAL TO FINISH IN 1980. THESE PUPPIES ARE FOR SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY TO QUALIFIED BUYERS.
  • WE ARE PROUD TO SAY THAT ALL PUPPIES SOLD FROM ARIAMI HAVE BEEN PLACED IN HOMES RESPECTIVE TO THEIR INDIVIDUAL POTENTIALS ON WRITTEN GUARANTEES.

THE WELL-BEING OF THE WHIPPET IS OUR UTMOST CONCERN. WE BELIEVE IN PRODUCING A DOG THAT MUST BE ABLE TO FUNCTION AS A "COMPLETE WHIPPET", AND AT THE SAME TIME BE TRULY PART OF A FAMILY.

IT MUST BE A PRODUCT OF:

A BREEDING THAT HAS A PURPOSE.
