TOPPER'S WISTFUL OF REGALSTOCK

(CH. PINETOP'S OPENING KNIGHT, ARM x CRICK-E-SU'S LOVIN LILY)

We wish to salute WISTY and all her ARM winning and pointed offspring!

WISTY has proven to be a remarkable brood bitch. She is the breed's premier dam of ARM winners, having produced 7 ARM winners by 3 different sires. In addition, 6 more of her offspring have earned ARM points.

And, there are more to come!

Some of her offspring now racing should finish. She also has a new litter of 5 males and 4 females, from her third time breeding to VAN OORSCHOT'S TORO, ARM, born November 20, 1980.

WISTY'S offspring, almost without exception, have been naturally lure keen and easy to train for racing, possess tremendous desire to race, and often have very outstanding speed.

OVAL TRACK RACING, 1980

Dave Rosenstock, NOTRA National Race Director

Six NOTRA licensed Oval Track Race Meets were held in 1980, all on the 350 meter drag-lure grass track. In addition, an unofficial meet was run on a 200 meter 'U' shaped drag-lure track.

All the meets were for Whippets and consisted of 3 programs of racing on a single day. Entries varied from 22 to 43 starters. Four meets used 4-dog races while 2 meets used 6-dog races because there were 40 or more starters. The use of 6-dog races for the first time proved to be successful and very exciting.

The races this year were dominated by the brother-sister team of FLYAWAY SPIRIT OF CACHET, ORC (BLAZER) and FLYAWAY DELISA'S DELIGHT, ARM (CORKY). BLAZER, owned by the Cochrans of Fairfield, California, won 4 meets, became the first OVAL RACING CHAMPION (ORC), and set the hand-timed track record of 23.4 seconds for the 350 meter turf course. CORKY, owned by Sue Morris, came on in the second half of the season to win 2 meets, and has earned 11 points toward the ORC award. Congratulations to the owners and breeders Stacy Kincade/Sue Morris on the exploits of these fine racers. Other Whippets which earned ORC points in 1980 with their point totals through 1980 are: REGALSTOCK WISTFUL ALAINE, LCM (Gill) - lOpoints; REGALSTOCK AMBERWOOD VOODOO, ARM (Rosenstock/McConnell) - 6 points; FLYAWAY BOOMER OF FAIRFIELD (Finlay) - 3 points; and KIRBY OF WYNDSOR (Balint) - 1 point. Whippets which won races in 24.0 seconds or faster this season were BLAZER (5 times), CORKY, MIGHTY THOR OF WYNDSOR (Dennan), and REGALSTOCK AMBERWOOD DAVOOD (Rosenstock/ McConnell).

The wonderful Whippets gave owners and spectators many thrill as they continue to demonstrate their tremendous ability on the oval track. I wish to thank the Northern California Whippet Club. the Northern California Whippet Fanciers, Inc., and their members for hosting the meets. They made it a successful year of Oval Racing.

The NATIONAL OVAL TRACK RACING ASSOCIATION was organized in 1975 to write the

Rules and Regulations for sighthound amateur oval track racing, keep the records of race results, and award OVAL TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPs (ORC) to outstanding racers.

The first meets were on a Greyhound training track in Turlock, California. There were two meets in 1975 with 3 programs of racing at a distance of 350 yards. In 1978 a meet was held on a drag-lure grass track at a distance of 350 meters (383 yards). Since then meets have been regularly held, mostly on a drag-lure grass track.By the end of 1980, 14 NOTRA licensed meets have been held. These meets have been hosted by either the Northern California Whippet Club or the Northern California Whippet Fanciers, Inc. Entries have ranged from 21 to 43, averaging about 30.

In 1980, FLYAWAY SPIRIT OF CACHET (Blazer) owned by Joe and Joni Cochran, became the first Whippet to complete the requirements for an OVAL RACING CHAMPIONSHIP. He won 4 meets and holds the hand-timed track record of 23.4 seconds for 350 meters on grass.

It is clear from the experience of 5 years of Whippet oval racing that it is a somewhat different ball-game than NPR sprint racing or lure coursing. In order to do well on the oval race course, a racer must have a combination of speed, agility, stamina, and track sense to maintain high speed through the bends while racing in a pack plus make 3 high-speed runs in an afternoon.

NOTRA looks forward to the growth in the number of meets held each year as owners learn about the fun of participating and more clubs organize to host Oval Race Meets.

Watch for the schedule of 1981 meets!

NORTH TEXAS WHIPPET CLUB - 1980

In last year's Whippet News Annual the NTWC listed its goals for the year 1980 and we are proud to report that all those goals have been accomplished.

The NTWC now has a permanent race site on the property of Don and Barbara Koch at Celina, 30 miles north of Dallas. We had our first race at this location June 1st and we were scheduled to have our two day September race there, but Mother Nature intervened. We had a "great flood" so an alternate place was finally managed. Since that time an all- weather road has been added, so access should be quite easy.

At our annual Christmas party, '79, those attending had such a good time that pocketbooks let loose, and through our Chi nese Auction we were able to raise enough money to purchase not only new starting boxes but also a club trailer. For

the new year a club lure machine seems to be a high priority.

In March we had our AWC supported Whippet entry show at the Texas Kennel Club show; Jane Kaye was the judge and we had 47 entries. We will have another AWC supported show on March 22, 1981, and are planning on a larger turn out. This sup ported entry show will be the same week-end as Ft. Worth K.C. and Trinity Valley K.C. All these shows will be in Ft. Worth. It has also been suggested we try to have a NPR the Friday of the big show week-end. We'll keep you posted. Our club looks forward to the day when we can have an AWC Whippet Specialty in our area.

As of Nov. 29th, the NTWC will have had three National Point Races this year and the Alamo Club has had one NPR race. The NTWC entries have come from as far away as Wisconsin and Dela ware with many of the great Mid-Western dogs present. We surely appreciate the support of all these dedicated Whippet owners. Overall, race entries are gradually going up as we get more new area owners. Whippet show entries are also on the increase in our reg i on. Too, more of our members have been able to compete in other regional races this year - the M id-West, Las Vegas, and Amherst, Ma. SOme have achieved ARM. points at out-Of-state races and we are proud that our dogs can compete so well. We are especially pleased that two Texas dogs made ARM in '80! Other members have finished dogs in conformation and obedience. Another goal for '81 is to re-introduce lure coursing to our members and friends.

We are also pleased to report that our Club President for the last two years was appointed Regional Race Co-ordinator for the South-Midwest area, i.e., New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

All in all, it's been a very good year for our club and its members. We look forward to 1981.

Jackie is the only littersister of the famous racer Jandall's Formula One and the well-known courser Jandall's Travertine Marble, F.Ch. Their dam, Toni, is a littersister to my Kinni. My thanks to Randall and Janice Robbins for offer ing her to me after Kinni's death in June. Jackie stayed in California to race at Santa Barbara where she tied for tenth in an entry of 72, then came to Wisconsin . Steadily improving, she finished her A.R.M. in two months and ended the year placing second at Celina, TX in an entry of 42. Jackie is starting obedience work and we hope to try lure-coursing in 1981. Her cousin T.J., my Scram Top Job, finished her F.Ch. at age 7 1/2 last spring, so, all in all, it has been a good year for us despite Kinni's untimely loss.

Great Western Whippet Association Report

Great Western Whippet Association was formed in 1972 by a group of Whippet friends who found they were meeting to practice race, discuss and socialize on a regular basis. 'Why not form a recognized club, hold matches and NPR races.' And so it began - - - a small group then and still a small group even today of very compatible people who are still the same founding members for the most part.

Our first President, John H. Baker, put it very aptly when he said, 'May we grow strong in our activities, helpful in our ways and always work 'hand in hand' with all other Whippet organizations.'

And so the new club was formed; 'Lead and Lure' became the official bi-monthly newsletter; blue and gold were picked as the club colors; and the logo of a free running Whipper carrying the streamers of GWWA and 1972 date.

Our first exhibition race featured 20 dogs ranging from 3 month old pups to finished ARM dogs and was held in conjunction with the Silver Bay K.C. of San Diego. Our first GWWA Supported Show and NPR was held in conjunction with Silver State K.C., Las Vegas, Nevada on November 12 and 13, 1972 - - this is now an annual event and the AWC has held their Annual meetings several times in association with this activity. This year, 1981, we again will have a NPR and inaugurate the new Las Vegas Dog Park as our race site.

Our club banner - - a gold background with blue lettering is proudly displayed at all functions. Plus the club motto adopted the first year, 'The Total Dog', is still the purpose of this club. We have tried through the years to encourage members with their dogs to try all functions available to this most versatile breed.

GWWA events for 1981 will include an All-Breed Match, May 3, held at Legg Lake, our two Lure Courses; and in addition to our Vegas NPR, which will be April 4, another NPR will be held at Legg Lake on Oct. 25. A General Meeting will be given Feb. 20 at Christy Davis' home, guests invited and anyone interested in attending, please contact the GWWA secretary.

Our incoming president will be Mike McDonald, and secretary for a second term will be Christine Cormany, 24819 Eshelman Avenue, Lomita, California 90717.

All the officers, board and members join with me in wishing everyone a most successful New Year and offer our services as a Club to anyone wishing to share their interests in our wonderful breed.

'In the beginning,

God created man,

but seeing him so feeble, He gave him the dog.'

(A quote from Toussenel - reprinted from the first GWWA Christmas issue.)

Most sincerely submitted,

Isabell Stoffers, 1980 President
