1985 Annual Report As we ring out the old year and ring in the new, the members of the NCWC can look back on 1985 with tremendous pride. Our dogs competed and were successful in every type of Whippet activity. At our annual awards banquet, which is held in conjunction with our Christmas party, 15 of our dogs were honored. This in itself shows the versatility of both the dogs and their owners. Championship plaques were presented in the following categories: 2 AKC Show Champions; 2 ARM Champions; 2 Obedience; 2 Field Champions; 2 LCM amd 3 Oval Track Champions. The club members can be very proud of this great accomplishment. During this past year the NCWC hosted many events which included: 4 NPR meets, 4 Oval Track meets, 4 Lure-courses and 1 All-Breed Fun-Match. As expected the Fun-Match proved to be the biggest and hardest challenge. We had really good entries in both the Conformation and the Obedience. Many complimentary letters were received, all complimenting the club on a real first class and well organized match. Once again our 4th of July weekend proved highly successful. Like all the other events we hosted, our after-the-meet party was well attended. The food was delicious and a good time was had by all. From the looks of the upcoming schedule, 1986 will be just as busy. The club is looking forward to hosting two events in conjunction with the AWC general membership meeting in April. Their puppies are expected in the spring of '86.

for this past racing season: Pictured above Denney Frye 1985 RACE PERFORMANCE SUMMARY by Doug Arthur A total of 49 National Point Race (NPR) Meets were conducted in the United States and Canada during 1985. The average adult entry increased from 37 to 38 compared to the previous year. The "superstar" of Whippet racing for the second consecutive year was Lyth Satus, ARM, ORC owned by Tony and Karen Lewis of Goldendale, Washington . Satus won 23 consecutive NPRs between 1984-85, tying the record set by Van Oorschot ' s Toro, ARM i n 1974-78. Satus' string was snapped at the Apri I Celina, Texas NPR by the young Mari al 's Whitewater, ARM. The only defeats for Satus during 1985 were to Whitewater, litter - brother Regal stock Lyth Router, ARM, ORC and W.R. 's Midnight Express, ARM. As Satus was dominating the west coast, Maria! 's Whitewater, ARM owned by Doug and Mary Beth Arthur and Bernice Strauss of Mi I waukee, Wisconsin was showing to advantage in the Midwest. Whitewater's on I y 1985 defeats were to Satus and Janie' s John Boy da Toro, ARM, ORC. Whitewater and Satus met each other only twice in 1985, both times in Celina, Texas, with Whitewater prevailing in April and Satus winning in convincing fashion in November. Since no flawless system of timing races exists in the amateur sport of Whippet racing, comparisons between race Whippets of different time periods or geographic regions are difficult. Track measurement, grade of land, length of turf, ground texture, wind, rain, ability of timer, etc. are al I variables influencing times. However, having raced Whippets since the mid-sixties, it is this author' s opinion that times have gotten faster the past three decades, from Ch. Pi netop ' s Opening Knight, ARM in the 60's, to Scram Whisper, C.D., ARM in the 70's to Lyth Satus, ARM, ORC in the 80's. The fastest "unofficial" times for 200 yards recorded in 1985 were: Lyth Satus, ARM, ORC 11.2 ( Burnaby), 11.2 (Victoria) and 11.4 (Tigard); Marial 's Whitewater, ARM 11.2 ( St. Louis), 11.3 (Delafield) and 11.4 ( Antioch, Hamilton and Bridgewater) ; John Boy da Toro, ARM, ORC 11.3 (Hamilton and Calgary). The top-ranked multi-purpose Whippet for 1985 was Ch. Texas Contender of Wyndsor, ARM owned by Barbara Koch of Dal las, Texas. Another AKC bench champion finishing his Award of Racing Merit (ARM) in '85 was Ch. Rockhi I I Oklahoma Crude, ARM owned by Barb Bussman of Ohio. A total of 15 Whippets won NPRs in 1985:

Therefore his box-breaking is unpredictable because he flails so while waiting for the gates to open; he usual ly is a come from behind winner." According to owner "during racing season Jiggles receives vitamin supplements including moderate dose of vitamin C immediately prior to and following race meets to control muscle stiffness. His racing conditioning consists of 1 1/4 miles of constant speed walking 5 days per week. He is allowed to free play over a large area with other Whippets at al I times, weather permitting and some intermitent tennis ball play when possible;" regarding temperament "Jiggles is very low key and totally non aggressive. He gets along well with other Whippets while co-existing quite well as a full-time house dog with other male adults;" al though Jiggles performs admirably in NPR racing " he very obviously favors oval racing where he combines his speed with a very keen track sense and unusual maneuverability instincts;" was second ranked Oval racer in '85; was Winners Dog and Best of Opposite Sex at Bayou Kennel Club Dog Show in February '85. It was a year of many activities and many awards won. In March, we sponsored an AWC Supported Whippet Entry and Sweepstakes; it was a big success ....... total Sweepstake Entries were 34, and total Regular Class Entries were 84 Not bad, and for '86, we're going to do it again Fort Worth Kennel Club,Sunday, March 23rd Puppy Sweepstakes Judge Jean Balint and for Regular Classes, Dr. John Reeve-Newson. Of course, we invite you all to come to Texas in March to show Whippets and see our spectacular Bluebonnets! April was another big month for us...we hosted the A WC'S Annual Membership Meeting, featuring the AKC Whi ppet Standard Slide Show, with AKC re presentative Roberta Campbell , as guest speaker. Board member, Dr. Barbara Henderson, also gave us a lesson in dog anatomy! (Papers were not graded!) Other events scheduled on the week-end were one NPR, one NOTRA and one Lure Course. Saturday's NPR went wonderfully well, 5 pups and 56 adult racers and the Texas blue sky shone warmly upon us. But that evening, Mother Nature frowned severely and let loose a thunderously fierce storm rain and more rain, about 7 inches, and power outages in the hotel and surrounding areas; needless to say, the other two activities were "washed out, However, by years end we did complete 6 NPR's and 3 ovals. Texas Whippets earning awards in '85 were numerous. But first, to complete "the end of the story" from last year's report: Yes, Chaparral's Barje Jigolo, ARM did complete his ORC title, the first Texas Whippet to accomplish this, and went on to give the number one racing dog, Lyth Satus, ARM/ORC, a very close challenge for the No. 1 ORC National Standing Title. And yes, Ch. Texas Contender of Wi n dsor , ARM earned his AKC Champion's Title early '85 to make his owner happy and proud. Other Texas dogs earning ARM Certificates in 1985 are: in May, Ca ptain Brewster of Wyndsor. ARM, owned by Barbara Koch; in August, Sundance Gallant Ghost, ARM, owned by Penny and Del Yorton and in September, Flybyou Poetic Justice, ARM owned by Johnny Martinez and Mary Huff. In the Show Ring, Denise Bowman and co-owner Charlie Maxwell's bitch, Ch. Chasmax Silver Plus Gold earned her AKC Championship. A really big winner, earning his way to an AKC Championship, is Mike and Sue Cowie's (co-owner and breeder is Ann Billups) Bob'n Tumbleweed Code Three, F. a...in San Antonio, August 8th, he went BOB, Group I and on to Best In Show! For sure, that is a day the Cowie's will not forget! Field Champion Certificates for 1985 went to the Yorton ranch to two of their Whippets: Sundance Quazar of Pendel. F. Ch. and Sundance Mark of Pendel, F. Ch. One of Texas' most renowned racing dogs, Karen Johnston's Gypsy's Butterscotch El Toro. ARM died during the summer. "Scotch" surely made himself well known and much respected, being an NPR meet winner many times even though he was never heavily campaigned. "Scotch" is ranked 13th in the USA All-Time Top 20 Racing Whippets, 1956-1984 (Reference: THE WHIPPET, by Bo Bengtson, Appendix 2, page 201.) He is truly missed by his owner and his many racing fans and friends. On a happy thought, "hope springs eternal in the human breast," (thank you, Alexander Pope) and many hopes are high on the new litters of puppies born in Texas in '85. ORSON is a talented young courser-racer-couchwarmer. After living in Ohio with co-breeders Randall & Janice Robbins, he returned to Wisconsin to begin his lure-coursing career. Starting out with a Best in Field at Ames, Iowa in September, he earned 80 ASFA points in only four meets, always full stakes. Orson also loves straight and oval racing. Two bitches from this "golden old movies" litter, whelped 2/10/84, are also ASFA pointed. BABS (Clulan Jandall's Now Voyager) has 61 points and my favorite, SOX (Clulan Jandall's High Noon), has 40 points. AMY (Clulan Jandall's Lost Weekend) has started novice obedience class. DEAN (Clulan Jandall's Key Largo) is now owned by Michelle Ramseau of Prior Lake, Minnesota. West Coast Regional Coordinator As 1985 draws to an end, we on the West Coast can look back on another great year of Whippet Racing. There were a total of 13 meets held in California and 3 in Washington . The race season here is long with the first meet being held in February and the last in December! I think that by December, the owners as well as their dogs were ready for some time on the couch. As you will see from the final standings for '85, the racing out here was completely dominated by the outstanding racer, Lyth Satus. This dog ran superbly and is truly deserving of the National Race Champion. His only competition on the West Coast was from his litter brother, Router. These two fine youngsters ran beautifully and have brought much pride to their owners. No one will dispute that racing out here is tough and competition is of the highest quality. When a dog gets his/her ARM award, they have truly earned it To the owners of these new 1985 racing champions, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations. I hope 1986 will be successful and enjoyable for all who compete! Other Midwest racers showing to advantage were Rialcel ' s Casino Skyline, Slade's Sweet Kap of Lazebrook and Al legro's Bit of Fortune. The top Midwest puppy racer for '85 that should move right into Grade A is Flyaway Jandal I 's Protocol owned by Randall Robbins of Ohio. Finishing their ARM ' s during 1985 were Barje's Queen of John, ARM, Ch. RockhilI 's Oklahoma Crude, ARM and Commander Jack Rogers, ARM. From Cynthia Schmidt...An East Coast Race Report 1985 saw some promising developments for Whippet racing on the East Coast The Jersey Rag Racers, originally an ASFA-oriented organization, began offering NPR racing at a Delaware site in May, and finished off the 1985 season with an October meet This raised to six the number of National Point Meets in the East. Also notable, was the successful transition from race track to show ring made by Rich Briscoe's black dog. "Stimmi e " added the title of AKC Champion to his racing laurels to become Ch. Sundance At Best Run N' Free, ARM. Another success story from Chris Blake's Sundance Kennels was Sundance Whatever, ARM, who finished his title in four NPR meets in New Jersey , Wisconsin and Ohio at the age of 16 months. Eastern competition in 1985 included some of the top runners in the U.S., such as Marial's Whitewater, ARM and Janie's John Boy da Toro, ARM, and also saw a high percentage of AKC Champions competing, sometimes exceeding 30%.
