IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR . . .
1985 has been very successful: CH. WHIPPOORWILL RUM TODDY, CH. WHIPPOORWILL BOHEM ARIA, CH. WHIPPOORWILL OVERTURE, CH. WHIPPOORWILL SONATINA and CH. WHIPPOORWILL SUAVE all won their titles in style with breeds from the classes, 5 point majors at AWC Specialty weekends, Group placements, etc. Our English import CH. HARDKNOTT MAESTRO OF BOHEM (see pedigree section) has established himself as an important young sire, with 8 champions to his credit and many more on the way. Another rising star, WHIPPOORWILL FOX BROTHERS, at only 9 months and at one of his first outings, won WD & BOW in an all—time record class entry of 199 at the AWC Midwest Specialty! For 1986 we are hoping for puppies by Fox Brothers' 13 year old sire, CH. PROUD FOX OF WHIPPOORWILL (by Ch. Greenbrae Barn Dance), by his nephew CH. FENWICK OF WHIPPOORWILL (sire of at least 18 Chs.), by Maestro and perhaps also by some of the youngsters. Maestro, Toddy, Overture and Fox Brothers are at stud to approved bitches.
MINE EYES DECEIVED ME by Eugene L. Jacobs In the 40's and early 50's things still lifted off with a slow two beat when "Lady Day" sometimes sang in her mocking, melancholy voice, "Tell me more and more and then some, you know how I love that stuff, whisper on from now till dooms day, but I never will hear enough; tell me more and more...". Whippets were one of two types, the American or English type, and it would be another twenty years or there abouts before combinations of those types emerged. The American Whippet Standard was not specific about size and stated the ideal height was not intended to be definite, only approximate. In the 40's the American sporting-type Whippet often appeared larger than English type specimens of that breed, but it would be awhile before some people started to develop a suspicion that the apparent size difference, as well as supposed size difference within each type, was not always a reality and many times the supposed size difference was optical illusion and not numerical fact. We started becoming suspicious and curious about Whippet size in the 50's, after some exhibitors of other breeds and a few judges asked us if our Whippets were large. To answer their inquiry we recited the Standard, and reminded them that size was not definite, only approximate, and asked those who inquired what "too large" was. For the most part, they couldn't give a valid answer, but by appearance, some of our Whippets looked large to them. They had said the key work, "looked", and that started us to ponder the likelihood that some Whippets might be optical illusions regarding their size and might or might not measure being as large as they appeared to be. Another factor which started us thinking along that line was when the Whippets would "line up" in front of their kennel run gates and stand motionless for variable periods of time, and looking at them, the animals didn't display much difference in size - even those which were sometimes "condemned" for being large. As a sweeping generality, we housed about twenty Whippets in our kennel, and if the odd ball breeds I maintained were counted, I suppose we had twenty-five dogs. The Whippets we started to measure first were individuals some exhibitors and a few judges declared as being large, and when we measured them, they were within the suggested height limit for their sex or right at the height limit, but in almost every case, they weren't over the suggested height limit. At that time, the Standard suggested dogs be 19 to 22 inches, and bitches be 18 to 21 inches, and "These are not intended to be definite limits, only approximate." We measured our Whippets and there was slight variation between them, but the differences were usually within the suggested height limits as declared in the Standard. As I recall, only one or two Whippets measured over the suggested height limit by approximately a half inch. In spite of that numerical truism, our Whippets gave the general illusion of being large as compared with small, and for most of that winter we exchanged running conversation with one another about what feature or features might cause that kind of optical illusion. Some Whippets who gave the impression they were large had good bone substance, but there were others who had similar bone and substance and they didn't seem to look large, yet that animal might have been numerically about the same measured size as the ones who looked large. Admittedly, the amount of bone and substance a Whippet sometimes had was a contributor toward the look of size, but Sibyl and I were becoming aware of the probable fact there was more to it than that. We dealt in the deck the probable influence the amount of muscle mass, body definition and modeling a Whippet had as contributors toward the look of size, but we were swiftly arriving at the belief that in all likelihood a Whippet's deportment and body language might be the most significant contributor toward the look of size. Eventually, that belief became fractured because some small Whippets with large dog deportment and body language didn't convey the illusion they were anything but what they were - "teenies" with sass. In those days, and I think it is still true today, Whippets who appeared large as compared with small, took the brunt of the criticism - why was it a more serious wrong for a Whippet to appear large, than for one to appear small? I never heard a good answer to that question, and I still haven't heard a good answer to that inquiry. It was my belief in the 40's and 50's that if most of the Whippets who were considered so ideal in size because they appeared small were measured, many would measure far larger than they believably gave the illusion of being. The problem was, and still is today, those Whippets who have the illusion of size are so believable they are that size, they were seldom measured to validate they were or were not the height they appeared to be. After a winter discussing with one another what causes the optical illusion of size, and never resolving what creates it, we approached our fellow breeders/exhibitors who lived in the northern part of Illinois and asked them if they had the same optical illusions we were having. In the 40's and into the 50's, there were three Whippet breeders/exhibitors in our state - ourselves, with the "Whipoo" prefix; the former Barbara Eyles, with the "Eyleland" prefix; and Barbara and Josephine Steinberg, who had the "Traymatt" prefix. Yes, they were also having that same experience and we shared conversation about the matter. Eventually, we decided to get together on our property and evaluate Whippets, estimate their size, measure them, and we agreed upon a weekend which would probably be pleasant weather to be outside to conduct that kind of activity. On the appointed weekend, Barbara Eyles arrived with numerous Whippets, and one of the many animals she brought was Eyleland Winter Wind. The twins brought many Whippets and one of the animals they brought was Traymatt Rooster Boy. It was decided that one person would move his/her Whippet in dog show fashion, and the other people would stand together in a cluster and verbally evaluate that animal. After the Whippet was appraised, and sometimes suggestions were given, we wrote down that animal's probable size before it was measured. Both "Winter Wind" and "Rooster" were considered large, and their owners were told from time to time that they were "right up to size", but when they were measured, they didn't measure "that large". I no longer recall what their numerical measurements were, but they were far short of being Greyhound-like in height, which was what the disciples of diminutiveness alluded to, and we shared opinions what might cause those optical illusions of size. We tossed ideas back and forth and never pinpointed the feature which creates the illusion of size, and pretty much agreed it was the combination of many factors which created that illusion, and in all likelihood, bone and substance, and deportment and body language might possibly be the greatest contributors toward the illusion of size. In all probability, those who have recently become associated with Whippets have difficulty believing how common it once was for many Whippets to have been optical size illusions, and even more difficult for those people to fully believe how convincingly those Whippets conveyed the illusion they were that size. That was a truism at both ends of the size spectrum, and as I've stated, many of the Whippets who appeared so large or small, weren't numerically what they appeared to be and sometimes those two ends of the spectrum weren't that far apart in actual height. While illusion of size was not uncommon, another aspect of Whippets was as equally usual, and that was the appearance of size, or real difference in size, in litters. For example, two large looking Whippets might be bred and when the litter of six was whelped, four gave the promise of being not unlike the sire and dam in size, but two others appeared much smaller. Conversely, two small appearing Whippets bred together sometimes produced a litter of like inconsistency. Breeding two adult dogs together who represented the appearance of different size was just as frustrating - the litter might be a mixture of both apparent sizes or be six puppies who appeared to be not unlike their sire or dam in size. Though today's Whippets are the result of animals before them, specimens of the breed when size was often an optical illusion, and Whippets didn't breed true, I don't believe the optical illusion of size is often seen today, and I believe there is much more consistency in breeding results today. In '85, I co-bred a Whippet bitch and seven puppies were whelped - I was very impressed with the uniformity of the litter in the consistency of size that the litter had - seldom seen in the 50's - and as those puppies matured, they retained a uniformity which was unheard of years ago. What probably causes more consistency in Whippets? It's my belief that after the Whippet Standard became specific about size, the illusion of size swiftly lessened, and in time the consistency in size, both imagined and real, started showing up in the whelping box because breeders probably ceased breeding Whippets who not only measured at one or the other end of the size spectrum, but also those who appeared large or small, regardless of the actual measurement.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers Phoebe Booth Southern California Whippet Association 1985 found the Southern California Whippet Association continuing our tradition of THE WHIPPET AS A MULTI-FACETED ANIMAL...On the show side, we had our second Whippet Weekend, highlighted by our Second Independent Specialty in conjunction with our supported entry at the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills Show in February. Presiding over our festivities were Mr. Dale Simmons, doing the Regular Classes and Mrs. Mary Dukes, doing the Sweepstakes Classes. In June, we held our Father's Day Match, with Mr. Richard E. Rupert doing Sweepstakes and Mrs. Bette Anderson doing the Regular Classes. This followed the day after our June N.P.R., proving that whippets do it all. Both N.P.R. and Oval Racing continued to be be popular in Southern California . Being in this area has its advantages, as we are able to hold the first and last race meets of the year. We began in February, with our President's Day Race Weekend and ended in December with our Inaugural "Specialty" N.P.R. During the year, we were able to host several other N.P.R. and Oval races for our friends from around the country. Somewhere, we also found time to sponsor several N.O.F.C.A. Open Field Hunts in Merced. We concluded the Tenth Annual Turkey Run on Thanksgiving Weekend with a very successful lure course. The Whippet entry was the largest in over four years.
