Loch finished at Annapolis with a 3 point major.
Following his half-sister's example, he was
BOS in Sweepstakes at the Midwest Specialty in 1989.
While he is maturing, he is having a ball lure coursing, earning 60 points toward his
field championship and Best Whippet in Field over two of the top 10 field champions
his very first weekend out coursing.

Loch will be shown as a special.

Noel finished her championship in short order a little over a year old.
She has acquired 1/3 of her CD. She has also earned points toward her Field Championship
and if Suzanne would be a little more ambitious, she could complete her titles
as soon as she's out of the whelping box.

Presently, we are awaiting the arrival of puppies from Noel, sired by Whippoorwill Moonstone.
Puppies are due on New Year's Day, 1990.

Betsey was pointed at her first show as a puppy.
After a few select shows to gain ring experience, she began seriously pursuing her
championship last spring, always owner-handled.
Her finishing weekend, Betsey took Breed and Group placements both days.

Palmeridge and Marial are most pleased that both litters are in homes dedicated to the N.P.R., N.A.W.R.A., N.O.T.R.A. tracks and the show ring as well. While both litters are too young to evaluate their success, we feel that they are developing well.

Both Dams, Marseille and Nekoosa, are daughters of the incomparable Ch. Marial's Memphis, ARM, ROMX.

The trip seemed like one of those destined to never happen. Claudia couldn't go; then Joyce, my sister, wasn't sure she wanted to. I wasn't sure I wanted to. The Regional Invitational was the same weekend, one of the precious few drag lure trials, with a judge I admired. I have competitive lure coursers, but haven't had a competitive race dog since Dreamer. Why spend all day going to Vancouver Island for maybe a "Third Highest Score in Grade D" ribbon when I had a better than even chance of getting ASFA points in Seattle- -just three hours away?

Because I wanted to go to the Island. Tony and Helena James have their own tracks. The racing is relaxed and friendly, the English garden a delight, the food superb, and the gossip scintillating. Only two meets a year, spring and fall. I try my best to make it. And sometimes ... sometimes one of my little dogs has a good day.

Finally it started to fall together. Joyce decided it was probably the only chance she would ever get to see the place she'd heard so much about. Claudia could and would go - we'd pile everybody and everything into her Suburban.

It took hours to load - my fault. Claudia and Joyce were exasperated but still hanging onto some thin smiles. Finally, four hours late, Claudia's husband Dave saw us off with a grin and the instructions, "If you get tired, just chant together, ROAD TRIP, ROAD TRIP, ROAD TRIP!"

There were rest stops because of the puppies (but we would end up walking everyone), and a traffic jam going through Seattle ("Road trip, road trip, road trip!"). There was a panic when we realized we might not make the ferry, then the long wait in line. The ferry with its bland, boring dinner, followed by the long, dark drive up the Malahat ("Road trip, road trip"), and a short night on the Jameses' living room floor.

But Saturday dawned with the smell of fresh eggs, sausages and muffins cooking and that intangible feeling of suspense that always comes on race day. Tony sat at the kitchen table searching the racing guide while people scribbled out entries. The air fairly crackled with news and gossip and a question repeated with each arrival: "How many dogs today?"

The meet, however, was as predictable as only straight racing can be. The expected dogs got the points. The Top Ten was just as you might guess. Little Pluck, the only dog of mine who can be guaranteed to bring home a rosette, did just that--High Score, Grade D. I said to Joyce, "Tomorrow will be my day." She looked puzzled, but said nothing. Maybe she was thinking it was hard for me having slow dogs after the days of Dreamer. But I was remembering the spring meet. The 220 oval, with its sharp turn, favors small dogs on the rail. Sometimes, if one of my little guys has a good day ... Like Citizen Ant, slipping in, to everyone's astonishment, for that last Top Ten ribbon in April.

But none of us had the remotest notion of what that next day would be like. It started with Pluck--my faithful little Grade D--who roared past a big FTE in his first race. Then Reckless, the only wide runner in the litter, broke badly, but somehow still managed his way past other dogs from the outside. Citizen Ant hugged the rail like I knew he would and streaked across in first place. Dragonfly broke like something out of a dream and went box to wire. Joyce started shaking her head.

Claudia's mouth sagged. I was grinning from ear to ear. To heck with Regional Invitationals. Pluck's eyes were shining, Dragonfly was hopping around like Citizen Ant, Citizen Ant was punctuating every step with "Roo Roo Roo!", and Reckless was banging on his crate door. Today, even if for only one day, my guys were race dogs.

Regrouping after regrouping, I would think, "This time they've gotten in over their heads. They can't beat these dogs." Race after race, my black dogs would go to the rail and win

But some things are just impossible. My Grade C Dragonfly cannot win a next-to high-point race. " Just lead them to the turn and you'll make my day," I whispered in his ear. He chose that poignant moment to knock me in the mouth with his muzzle. I loaded him in the box, hoping for third place. But he missed the break and was jostled going into the turn. I sighed and started walking to the finish to pick him up.

"Claire! Look at your dog!"

I glanced at Helena and then looked up at the race. A black dog was on the inside, going by one dog, then another. A black dog, my black dog, in first, unbelievably pulling away from the rest.

"Road trip, road trip, road trip." We got back to Portland about 5 a.m. Monday--Claudia back to her family, Joyce back to the classroom, and Ito a sinkful of dirty dishes. But I ignored them and went to bed. When I got up, it was already only a dream. But there they were, on the table: three Top Ten rosettes. Pluck, 10th; Citizen Ant, 9th; Dragonfly, 4th in meet. I sat out on the porch in the sun drinking tea, smiling to myself and doing little mental instant replays of a black speck streaking across a finish line.

(Ch. Texas Contender of Wyndsor, ARM x Allegro Aria Nova, FCh.)

We are very proud to introduce our first A.R.M. titled dog, Queenies Mister Contender, ARM, call name "Bruiser". Bruiser is 21 1 /2" tall and weighs 34 lbs. He finished his title by taking the top points in three consecutive NPR meets. The weekend he finished, a double NPR in Ohio, featured 6 of the top 10 nationally ranked NPR dogs. He placed 6th in the meet the first day, and placed 3rd in the meet the next day to finish his title. His best finish, 2nd in the meet (Ohio-June), earned him 5 ARM and 3 National points, placing him in the top ten nationally for the year.

At home Bruiser is a quiet, playful friend to his kennelmates, but at the track he is an aggressive runner who has shown great come-from-behind speed; he just does not like to lose. We believe what helps a dog reach his potential is to be pushed hard at practice with a dog of equal or greater speed. This belief proved to be true in our own St. Louis club for Bruiser and his practice buddy "Apple" (Rialcel's Casino New York, ARM), for they both finished their ARM titles this year. Congratulations to Mike and Sue Weilbacher and Pam LeClair, owners and breeders of "Apple".

Bruiser would like to extend a special congratulations to his littermates (and their owners) for their accomplishments:

Queenies Contender of Aria, FCh. (ARM pointed)

Queenies Mystic Contender, CD (Bragg)

Queenies Contendress of Allegro, FCh. (Smith)

We're looking forward to the 1990 racing season. See ya then!

THE AMERICAN WHIPPET, CLUB, NATIONAL POINT, RACE, ANNUAL
REPORT, 1989

STATISTICAL HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR:

1. 31 NPR race meets were scheduled, 26 were official meets, and 5 were canceled. There was a grand total of 831 Whippets running, 781 were adults, 23 puppies, and 27 Spay/Neuters.

2. The largest meet of the year again was the Jersey Rag Racers meet of July 2nd, 61 Whippets participating! The next largest meet was our Third National Specialty, April 30th at Celina, Tx., 41 Whippets running. WAS-IT's race on May 6th, was third largest, with 41 Whippets.

3. The winning Whippet at our Third National Specialty was Ringdove Mr. October, owned by Ken and Rosemary Whatley. They are the proud owners for the year of the beautiful IAM's trophy specially made and donated to our NPR program two years ago.

4. Once again, our Whippets showed excellent manners on the track, which, of course, represents good race training procedures. Only four (4) fouls were called in '89!

5. Seven Award of Racing Merit Certificates were presented at the Awards Banquet in Dallas in November. The Whippets that earned and received this high honor will be noted elsewhere in the report.

6. Top winning Whippet for the year is Ringdove Saturn, ARM, F. Ch., owned by Glen Ferguson of Canada. The top winning Spay/Neuter Whippet for the year is P J's Mr. All Ears, LCM, owned by Jennifer Miller of Virginia.

Our goal for '89 was to complete our rules revision and additions process, and we accomplished it!!! The final draft is in the hands of Regional Race Coordinators and Race Secretaries as I write, and final printing will be done by the end of February. Anyone wishing a copy of our new NPR Rules should write me at: 6541 Dartbrook Dr. , Dallas , TX., 75240. The cost per set is $4.00, postpaid. With the final acceptance gained before the '90 racing season begins, it assures that all will be operating under the same rules and regulations. A reminder, we have the Halemar and McGowan muzzles for sale, as well as the Downey Official Wickets.

A 1990 NPR Race Calendar is included with this report as is the list of the Host Clubs, and local Race Directors. Any changes that need to be made as the year progresses, will be noted in AWC's publication, Whippet News.

Financially speaking, the Program is again in the black; we collected $415.50 from the per capita fee of $.50 per Whippet. Much of these funds will be used to finance the printing of our new rules, plus the usual expense for printing race results and postage for mailings. A final financial statement will be given to the AWC Board of Directors at the April '90 meeting in California.

REPORTS FROM THE REGIONAL RACING COORDINATORS:

EAST COAST LYNNE MCGOWAN:

The '89 race season saw dogs competing from all over the country and Canada. We held 5 meets and 2 were cancelled. We started in April and were planning to finish up in December. But Mother Nature had other ideas and dumped 8 inches of snow on us the Thursday night before.

The biggest meet in the country was the 4th of July Versatility Week-End held by The Jersey Rag Racers. There were 57 entries for Coursing, 78 for Fun Match, 14 for Obedience, 51 Adults, 6 Spayed/Neutered, 4 Puppies for the NPR and 48 for the

U-val. Lyth York ARM ORC owned by the Eaker's of Texas won the

NPR and U-val for the third straight year. Carbeth Johnny's Angel LCM 3 owned by the Kirchner's of New Jersey won the breed at coursing and went on to become the versatile whippet for the week-end.
