THE SAGA OF SUNDANCE

by Jan Wilt
( Pagosa Springs, CO.)

On Sunday afternoon, May 9th, we decided we needed a bike break from long hours of gardening, so we called to Sundance, and our PBGV'S Gusto & Cinders, and rode over onto the San Juan National Forest . We had a wonderful 6 mile tour, and on the way home, which is down-hill, I noticed that Sundance was trotting along with a kind of "green-around-thegills" look on his face. I called him to me, and he wagged his tail, and I hoped that he was only hot. Later that evening he wanted to play Frisbee, and he was pumped up for

that, so I was relieved.

He seemed perfectly normal the next day. Then, on Tuesday morning, he stayed in his bed long after we were up. For the rest of the day he was normal, with a good appetite and eager to play. Wednesday, he again, "slept in", but was fine the rest of the day. On Thursday, he seemed kind of

lethargic, for Sundance. I thought of Lyme disease from our trip to the east coast. He played with Cinders, ate well, and was alert and bright-eyed, but stayed in his bed more than usual.

I called our veterinary clinic and made an appointment for a check-up. One problem was that we had never had a Whippet before, to know about their "normal" behavior. Dr. Tortora, in his book, THE RIGHT DOG FOR YOU, indicates Whippets to exhibit a very low INDOOR energy level, and a very high OUTDOOR energy level. That is the way Sundance was behaving. We didn't know him well enough to classify him "wimp" or "stoic", and that is important.

The next morning Sundance had a slight temperature, and blood tests showed indications of gastroenteritis. He had vomited his breakfast that morning, but no diarrhea. Oral antibiotics were prescribed and administered as soon as we reached home. 15 minutes later he spit up the medication. I thought it might be too powerful on an empty stomach, so gave him some cheese and then the antibiotics. That didn't stay down either, so we went back to pick up injectable medication. He had periods of "up" and "down", which was very confusing and frustrating to me. The bottom line was that he was NOT improving!

On Sunday night at 10 PM, I phoned Dave (David Baker, DVM), and asked him to see Sundance. We did more blood work which showed an enzyme found in dogs with kidney failure. Also he could palpate a very tender mass which could be a kidney. An 8 month old puppy as fit and healthy as Sundance certainly COULDN'T have kidney failure! I suggested exploratory surgery, but Dave wanted to try different medication, along with IV fluids, etc. We started IVs before we left, and I cautioned him that Sundance would NOT tolerate those tubes `cuz he had been a "mouthy" puppy.... had an oral satisfaction problem. Everything went into his mouth for identifica tion.

Dave gave a few extra wraps on the gauze and tape to hold the needles in place and said, "As sick as he is, he won't even notice the needles and tubes." Dave was convinced Sundance was dying of kidney failure. We left at midnight, and Dave phoned the next morning at 6 AM to report that, "You were right, Sundance removed ALL IV equipment within minutes, so he is now wearing an Elizabethan collar. I can't figure him out, at times he is curled up in the corner of his cage and other times, he comes out of his cage wagging his tail and looking good."

I spent most of Monday with Sundance, and we just visited. I told him that he couldn't die so young, we have so many adventures planned. Sundance is so loving, so attentive, almost cat-like in his wanting to be close. He comes up and touches my knee with his nose, for attention. He is such a superb athlete, both Lu (my husband for 44 yrs.) and I love to watch him run. He moves like the West Wind, touching earth gently now and then.

Sundance was getting weaker, so surgery was scheduled for 6 AM Tuesday. Our phone rang at 6:20 AM. Dave was calling while Sundance was still opened up! We had talked about euthanasia, should he find a terminal condition, and by then we were as convinced as Dave that Sundance was dying. Dave had found a large abscess in the mesentery in the caecum, colon, ilium area, and when he opened it, he found a THREE-INCH PORCUPINE QUILL! His concern was the location. He could not remove a portion of the intestine (which he would have preferred), to prevent scarring and, perhaps, total obstruction. Also, "I'm not sure we can save Sundance from succumbing to peritonitis. The contents of the abscess filled the abdominal cavity. Do you want me to euthanize him or try to save him?" Sundance had amazed all of us with his courage and stamina. Boy is HE stoic! He certainly deserved every chance to enjoy that life we have planned for him.

Of course, we told Dave to do everything he could to make Sundance well. They phoned me as soon as he started to come to, and I spent the rest of the day with him. No one at the clinic could believe how strong he was, all heart. While a fit, healthy, well-conditioned Whippet is elegant and powerful, one in Sundance's condition; skin and bones and pain- wracked, breaks your heart. Even in that condition, groggy from anaesthesia, when I opened his cage, he stepped out slowly and unsteadily, and bumped my knee with his nose - despite the over-sized Elizabethan collar he was wearing and all the needles and tubes in his front legs.

The next day they called to say he had gotten through the night and showed a wonderful attitude. They allowed me to take off his ungainly collar. Dave still wouldn't say that he was out of the woods, and we had another specter to fear; scar tissue building up to cause an obstruction. Fortunately, intestinal cells grow so fast, we'd have to wait only a few weeks to know if that would be a problem.

Dave assured me that IF he survived the next few weeks, he would return to his former good health. Wednesday evening, Dave called to say that I could bring Sundance the chicken liver I had promised him. Sundance was delighted to see me, and wagged his whole body. He was bright and entertaining while we visited on the lawn. Dave observed him for awhile and asked if I'd like to take him home. He still wouldn't pronounce him cured, but he was remarkably back to normal in only 48 hours after that awful surgery. Lu and Sundance were ecstatic to see each other even though Lu was shocked at our Little Prince's appear ance. With all the attention and love here, and no IV tubes, Sundance bounced (literally) back to good health in no time.

One tremendous advantage Sundance had was his fitness. He is so muscled up and hard-bodied, even though he nearly died, and the infection was terrible, the whole episode lasted such a short time, he never lost muscle tone. We still couldn't rule out scar tissue problems, but by then Sundance had convinced me that he wouldn't do THAT to me! What a relief to trade tears for smiles and to have "The Center of Our Universe" back to his vigorous, happy, loving self.

The Saga of Sundance (Epilogue)

Excerpts from recent letters from Mrs. Wilt to Sundance's breeder:

"It is a joy to watch an exceedingly bright puppy learn the ways of the natural world, as this very smart, perceptive, instinctive little guy has done. Only by having the opportunity to experience the good and the bad can a dog achieve the wisdom and survival skills and ENJOYMENT of a lifestyle like ours."

"Sundance is a "toucher". he comes up to me many times a day and touches my knee with his nose, and gets all kinds of lovin' as a result. Not many 10 month old children have been told, "I love you", as often as he has."

"One great credit to Sundance... and, perhaps to all good Whippets....was that he did everything necessary to get well, including eating huge quantities of my home-cooked meals and responding in like manner to my nurturing. Basking in my on-going conversations and hugs and sleeping on my lap, with him giving back to me reassurance that he would NOT leave me. We are "joined at the hip" forever, as a result of that ordeal."

When Sundance was a puppy we really worried about the "running full tilt into trees, barbed wire, over cliffs" stories that we heard about Whippets. Our sheer drop cliff to the canyon REALLY worried us `cuz, of course, that's where all the chipmunks and squirrels run for safety with a young Whippet around. I gave him lesson after lesson on "BE CAREFUL" as he'd approach the rim. It paid off because on a recent hike when he put up a rabbit, they had a fun chase until Sundance got too close, and the cottontail dived into a cleft in the boulders which formed a sheer drop of 500 ft. straight down. Sundance slammed on his brakes and looked wistfully into the open air into which the rabbit seemed to have vanished."

Jan Wilt & Sundance -A happy ending

PROUDLY PRESENTS

1992 & 1993 N.O.T.R.A. CHAMPION

Wheatland Orange Crush, ARM, SORC

" Zorro "

A Remarkable Year for a Remarkable Dog ! ! !

Here's a quick look at what he has accomplished since he started to oval track race in May of 1992:

  • First Back-to-Back NOTRA Champion since Lyth Satus
  • 32 Oval Meet Wins
  • 108 N.O.R.C. points; 4th on the All-Time list
  • 1992 Whippet Wrunner "Dog of the Year"
  • 1992 #2 NPR and 1993 #3 or #4 NPR, despite running less than half the year

And all of this being accomplished while overcoming toe injuries in '92 and major knee surgery in '93.
A special thanks to the breeders, Kim Otero and Michael Palmer, for allowing us to have such a wonderful dog.

QUEENIES would also like to brag about one of our breedings. Congratulations to "Queenies Blaz-N White Sox, ARM, ORC", who finished both his racing titles this year and is proudly co-owned by Rob Corner and Vicky Hadley. Thank you!!! Hope to see you all at the track in '94.

The whippet world lost a "CHARMER" - Rockhill's Karey Blue Charmer, Karey to those that knew her, had 15 memorable years with Penny, doing obedience to C.D.X. and training countless younger coursers. She was a constant source of encouragement to those she touched and always had something to say. Never in a bad mood, always a shadow come feeding time, she will be sorely missed in this house. God must have needed a devoted set of eyes and found "Karey". We know she waits for us and we'll be most pleased to see her on a "sit stay".
