2001 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual

Pages 1 through 25

Back issues of the AWC Whippet News Annual can be purchased for $25.00 each ($30.00 foreign), which includes shipping; all funds must be U.S. dollars, payable by check or money order to Whippet Annual. Mail to: Wendy Clark, WNAnnual Editor, 5088 Breckenhurst Dr., Hilliard, OH 43026 USA.

Connie Brunkow, DVM
This year I received the stats from CERF a little later, and the numbers appear to be more complete. In the past, there has been a difference in the final numbers of dogs in the reports due to a delay in sending forms and processing the data at CERF. I know that they’ve been working to fix this, and I hope this year’s stats will be up to date.

In 2000, 462 Whippets were examined, 265 were dogs, 188 were bitches and 9 didn’t have a gender indicated. Of those, 202 dogs, 150 bitches and 6 with no gender listed, had normal eyes. Of the 101 dogs with abnormal findings, 27 were not given a CERF number due to having inherited conditions. This is 27% of the abnormals and 5.8% of all dogs examined. All but 5 of those Whippets were diagnosed with cataracts of various types. The remaining 5 were found to have retinal atrophy, either generalized in one or both eyes, or considered suspicious by the examining ophthalmologist. The total number of dogs examined in 2000 was 127 fewer than in 1999. I’m not sure why this was the case - perhaps more folks flocked to their favorite local ophthalmologist due to the scare we had about possible PRA in the breed?

In 2001, 374 Whippets were listed as being checked, 206 dogs, 151 bitches, and 17 not identified. Of these, 59 had abnormal findings; 2 of these were males with retinal problems which did not pass CERF; 12 were animals with variously located cataracts, which also did not get a CERF number, and 21 Whippets were diagnosed with vitreous degeneration in one or both eyes. At this time, these Whippets will be issued a CERF number.

Looking at the numbers from one year to the next, the percentage of problems in the breed has been fairly flat. I don’t think the 2001 numbers are complete, or at least I hope not, as that would suggest folks are falling off in checking dogs. Most of the problems identified tend to not cause sight loss in the affected dogs, but as always, I preach vigilance in protecting our precious breed from as many inherited conditions as we can.

Dr. Schoster is now in private practice, but is continuing the vitreal study. His new web address is: www.horizondvm.com/vd. You can get the necessary forms for participation in the ongoing study (he is also including Italian Greyhounds now, as vitreal degeneration is a big problem in that breed). You can also get the data to date for the study. I encourage everyone to participate. So far, though vitreal degeneration seems to be in the breed, it appears that most affected Whippets will not lose eyesight.

Baroque • whelped 03-07-87 Bred by Ed Headrick

This year we moved back to the east coast and went to some shows. Thanks to our fellow exhibitors for being so very supportive. It was a good year.

Baroque, the kingly one, finished his bench championship at the age of 141/2. A remarkable all-breed record setting feat for an awesome whippet. He also won a few veteran classes, including the supported entry at the Eastern Specialty. Baroque has it all. Such a a cool dog and our best friend for all these years. He now has had the chance to produce and has blessed us with outstanding get.

Truly won the points at the Eastern Whippet Specialty. WOW! It was thrilling to finish her championship this way. She is a credit to her breeder/co-owner Patrick J. Pettit and a talented courser, plus the best mom/producer. We love her and feel extremely fortunate to have her in our life.

Praise God From Whom…

Ch. Upper Mountain Mayflower Madam
(Ch. Bar-Vic’s Ollie Take Two “Ollie Junior” x Ch. Upper Mountain JB’s Phantom, SC “Katie Anne”)

Our friends and family told us all along that DeeDee would finish with a bang, and boy, were they right! Christmas came early at Upper Mountain when hound-specialist judge Carol Reisman awarded DeeDee Best of Breed over four specials, including one in the Top 10, to finish her championship. Ms. Reisman then awarded DeeDee a Group 4 in a large and competitive year-end East Coast Hound Group at the Delaware Water Gap KC show in Bethlehem (how appropriate, huh?!), PA.

DeeDee started her career in the same dramatic manner at six months, three days of age, by winning Best Puppy in Show at the Burlington County KC, under judge Steven Gladstone. At her second show, less than two weeks later, Katie went BOB from the 6-9 class over 5 specials, including one in the Top 5, under hound breeder-judge Nick Frost.

After racking up the rest of her singles and doubles and taking time off to enjoy puppyhood on the farm, DeeDee returned to the ring with the very talented Kim Tudor (Laurel Chase) at the other end of the leash. R.Stephen Shaw soon thereafter awarded DeeDee a 3-point major at the Berks County Kennel Club over 21 bitches. After several “close calls” with major Reserves and broken majors, DeeDee put it all together and finished in her typical theatrical manner.

DeeDee will now be pursuing her coursing career and will then be bred in the spring of 2002.

Kim and Jim (Fredericks), we really appreciate your tenacity, determination, and the wonderful care you gave to DeeDee and Eli. Congratulations and best wishes as you start your life together. It couldn’t have happened to two nicer people!

GO ELI GO!!!!

Ch. Upper Mountain Spirit In The Sky, JC
(DC Sporting Field’s Jazz Fest, FCh. “Rory” x Ch. Upper Mountain JB’s Phantom, SC “Katie Anne”)

Eli finished his conformation championship while still a youngster, including a Best of Breed win at his first show while barely 7 months old. Five days later, Eli went Best in Sweepstakes at the American Whippet Club supported entry at Somerset Hills KC, under breeder-judge Joe Franchi. After gathering a few more singles and doubles, he earned TWO four-point majors in ONE weekend, under sighthound breeder-judges Dr. Asa Mays and Priscilla Gabosch.

Eli has since been successfully shown as a Special a handful of times (including several breed wins), while we wait for him to fully mature. Our friend and gifted handler, Kim Tudor (Laurel Chase), guided Eli to his championship and will return to the ring with him in 2002. Please see Eli’s pedigree in a later section of this Annual.

In the meantime, Eli is proving to be a keen courser and, at only his second field trial, he won a five-point major in a large and competitive whippet entry. This dog will do anything that we ask of him and we are blessed to have him in our lives.
