– NOTICE TO EXHIBITORS –

• Effective for all events held on and after January 1, 2008, The American Kennel Club will collect a $3.00 Event
Service Fee for the first entry of a dog and a $3.00 service fee for each additional entry of the same dog in the
regular and non-regular recordable single entry classes, in all AKC licensed and member club events. The current
50 cent recording fee will continue to be collected. The event-giving club shall assume the responsibility of
collecting all Event Service Fees for The American Kennel Club. These event service and recording fees shall be
forwarded to The American Kennel Club along with all other required event results within seven (7) days of the
close of the event.
• Dogs need be present only for scheduled judging and will be released if not needed for further judging.
• Dogs must be ready for judging. Neither the club nor BaRay Event Services will be responsible or obligated to
furnish any service for notifying exhibitors or their agents of Breed or Class Judging. Judges need not wait for any
dog holding up a class. Owners or agents alone are responsible for the presence of their dogs in the judging rings.
• RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE COMPLETENESS OF ENTRY RESTS SOLELY WITH THE ENTRANT.
• Entry fees shall NOT be refunded in the event that a dog is absent, disqualified, sick, lame, excused by the Judge
or Veterinarian, or barred from competition by action of the Show Committee, or because it has been entered
incorrectly. There is no refund of entry fee for bitches in season. There is no refund for DUPLICATE ENTRIES or
OVERPAYMENTS. BaRay Event Services will make every effort to find all duplicate entries, but if entry has been
processed, no refund will be made. If, because of riots, civil disturbances or other acts beyond the control of the
management it is impossible to open, or to complete the Show NO REFUND will be made. To find out about any
AKC event cancellations call the AKC Event Cancellation Hotline 877-252-3229.
• RETURNED CHECKS DO NOT CONSTITUTE A VALID ENTRY FEE. BaRay Event Services will add a $20.00 collection
fee to the amount of each returned check. Subsequent returned checks from the same exhibitor or agent may result
in their being put on a CASH ONLY BASIS.
• Only dogs eligible for these shows will be admitted into the show area. There is no provision for unentered dogs.
• LOSS OR DAMAGE – The Show Committee will use due care and diligence for the welfare of dogs and exhibitors,
but will not be responsible for, or assume any liability in the event of any accident or misfortune, to either dogs
or exhibitors participating in these Shows. The welfare of an Exhibitor’s child is assumed to be the responsibility
of the Exhibitor. It is distinctly understood that Exhibitors will exercise control and restraint over their children.

parasites, any communicable diseases, and have appropriate vaccinations.

BIG THANKS

This was an unusual year for planning the National since
Cindy Scott was selected to be the judge, and she also
knows all there is to know about planning the event.
Our thanks to her for her assistance when it was
appropriate for her to be involved.

Jackie Hubble filled in for Cindy as National Show
Chair. Many thanks to her for assisting the local
group in the process of planning.

It is clear to me that the performance events and the
health clinics happen because of the dedication and
tireless efforts of Lisa Costello. Thanks to Lisa for
making it all happen.

There would not be a show without the tireless work of
the committee people, the trophy donations, the welcome
bag sponsorship, the contributions to the hospitality
room, the grounds crew, the innovative ideas of everyone
involved, and the terrific hotel staff. The folks at BaRay
Events have held my hand all the way with helpful
patience. Please don’t let the work of so many people go
thankless – stop any of the committee folks and the staff
and give them your appreciative comments.
Most of all, thank you for entering
and showing your beautiful dogs.

Welcome to Oregon – enjoy your stay.

Respectfully,
Sue Carbajal
2008 AWC National
Local Show Chair

NATIONAL SPECIALTY SHOW HOTEL RULES

These rules have been established for the good of all exhibitors.
As an exhibitor, be aware that violations of these rules may also be referred to the Bench Show
Committee, if written charges are preferred. If the Bench Show Committee upholds such charges, it may
lead to suspension from future show privileges. Charges may also be filed with the AWC, which may lead
to expulsion from the Club unless fair and equitable claims are satisfied.

1. Plastic sheeting must be placed under every crate in your hotel room to keep carpets clean/ dry.
Plastic sheeting will be available upon check in.
2. DOGS MUST BE CRATED WHEN THE OWNER/HANDLER IS OUT OF THE ROOM!! NO
EXCEPTIONS.
3. NO DOGS ALLOWED IN HOTEL LOBBY AREA.
4. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times while in the hotel or on the hotel grounds.
5. Dogs must be exercised in designated areas on the hotel premises. EVERY DOG OWNER is
expected to pick up after their dog(s) and dispose of the waste in provided receptacles.
6. NO DOG MAY BE BATHED IN THE HOTEL.
7. Rooms must be kept clean of dog debris (chalk, hair, food, etc.). Please utilize Grooming Room
for your grooming (chalking, clipping, etc.)
8. Rooms will be inspected daily by members of the hotel staff. Any observed violations or damages
will be reported to hotel management and/or the Investigating Committee.
9. “Do not Disturb” signs will not be honored for the entire day by the hotel staff.
10. The Investigating Committee, working with a fair and equitable system, is in charge of investigating
complaints.
11. Each dog owner/room registrant is expected to cooperate with the Investigating Committee. All
owners/room registrants will settle damage claims immediately and to the hotel management’s
satisfaction.
12. Should the hotel, for cause, deem it necessary to cancel room privileges, the registrant agrees to
hold harmless and withhold any legal action against the AWC and it’s committees, the host club,
or the hotel. This is a condition of entry to the National Specialty.
13. Exercise pens will be allowed only in designated areas.
14. If you are leaving the hotel property and are leaving dogs crated in your room, please arrange
with another exhibitor who is remaining at the show site to be responsible for your dogs during
your absence in case of a problem or emergency. Provide the front desk with the name and room
number of the person responsible for your dogs during your absence. (Leaving your cell phone
number is advisable.)

When moving into your hotel room, check it carefully. If there are problems or damage from a prior
guest, call the front desk. This will avoid any problems due to undetected from before your arrival.
Important Reminder:

It is very important that we all do our best to maintain cleanliness with our dogs at our hotel. There
will be designated areas for exercising your dog(s). Don’t wait too long to get them out. Go to the
shortest route; take baggies with you in case of an accident. Do not walk away from your dog’s mess.
Demand others to clean up after their dogs. Please report someone who is not observing the rules. Your
cooperation and diligence will help to maintain our good name with our host hotels.
A Bench Show Committee Meeting and Hearing will be called on anyone who abuses the hotel. The
AKC will back us if we have a problem. Report issues to any of the following people: Sue Carbajal, Jackie
Hubble or Lori Nelson. Please remember to use the plastic sheeting under your crates. Bedspreads will
be removed from rooms where dogs are to be kept.
Very important note: The hotels will be removing bedspreads. They have made an exception for our
show for DOGS ONLY. Please leave all other pets at home as they will not be allowed on hotel property
– yes that includes being kept in your vehicle. Thank you!

NOTE: PLEASE BRING A SHEET FROM HOME TO COVER YOUR BED!!

GROOMING/STAGING AREA
There will be a separate room for crating and grooming dogs that are being exhibited on the day. No
exercise pens. All dogs must be removed from the crating room immediately after the conclusion of
judging each day.

CAUTION: Do not leave dogs in closed vehicles. A closed vehicle can rapidly overheat with tragic
consequences. In the event a vehicle must be entered to rescue a dog from overheating or suffocation
due to improper ventilation, all persons hereby waive any claim for damages against the Club, its
members or agents.

WHIPPET HEALTH FOUNDATION, INC.
HEALTH CLINIC INFORMATION

The Whippet Health Foundation will be conducting health clinics in conjunction with the
2008 AWC National Specialty. There will be a CERF, BAER and cardiac echocardiogram clinic
as well as AKC DNA Profile testing and Myostatin deficiency testing. The Whippet Health
Foundation will be subsidizing a portion of the per dog cost for BAER, cardiac and myostatin
testing for those dogs participating in the WHF database.

Test results from all clinics are confidential.

All test results released to the WHF Database will be public record.

HEALTH CLINIC SCHEDULE AT THE 2008 AWC NATIONAL

Eye Clinic: Wednesday , April 23rd. This clinic will be conducted by Dr. Sarah Maxwell, DVM,
ACVO. The CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) exam is a once a year test that examines
your dogs eyes for inherited eye disease.

BAER Hearing Clinic: Wednesday morning, April 23rd. This clinic will be conducted by
Dr. Susanne Hughes. The BAER (Brain stem Auditory Evoked Response) test is a once per lifetime
test to definitively determine if your dog can hear from both ears. It is important for everyone to
have their Whippets checked, particularly animals used for breeding. It is possible for a dog to be
deaf in one ear and appear to have normal hearing. If you are willing to enter both your dog and
the BAER result into the WHF database, we will subsidize $20 of your cost. These results will be
acquired the day of the test.

Cardiac Echocardiogram Clinic: Tuesday , April 22nd and Thursday , April 24th.
This clinic will be conducted by Dr. Gary Wood of Cardiology Northwest. These results will not
be used in our ongoing whippet heart study. If you are willing to enter both your dog and the
echocardiogram result into the WHF database, we will subsidize $75 of your cost. These results
will be acquired the day of the test.

AKC DNA Profile test: (DNA cheek swab test): Swabs will be available during the national from
either Dr. Lisa Costello or Dr. Connie Brunkow

Myostatin Deficiency test: (DNA test for the double muscle gene): Swabs will be available
during the national from Dr. Lisa Costello. She will also be attending the race meet in Beavercreek
the day following the conclusion of the AWC national. If you will not be attending the national, the
swabs from DDC and payment can be mailed directly to Dr. Costello and will be submitted with all
samples following the national specialty (they must be submitted together). These samples must
reach her at the address on the health clinic sign up form no later than APRIL 30th, 2008.

Whipet Bred Standard

General Appearance
A medium size sighthound giving the appearance of elegance and fitness, denoting great
speed, power and balance without coarseness. A true sporting hound that covers a maximum
of distance with a minimum of lost motion. Should convey an impression of beautifully
balanced muscular power and strength, combined with great elegance and grace of outline.
Symmetry of outline, muscular development and powerful gait are the main considerations;
the dog being built for speed and work, all forms of exaggeration should be avoided.

Size, Proportion, Substance
Ideal height for dogs, 19 to 22 inches; for bitches, 18 to 21 inches, measured at the highest
point of the withers. More than one-half inch above or below the stated limits will disqualify.
Length from forechest to buttocks equal to or slightly greater than height at the withers.
Moderate bone throughout.

Head
Keen intelligent alert expression. Eyes large, round to oval in shape. Small and/or almond
shaped eyes are undesirable and are to be faulted. Eyes to be dark brown to nearly black in
color. Eye color can vary with coat color, but regardless of coat color dark eyes are always
preferred. Light eyes are undesirable and yellow eyes are to be strictly penalized. Blue eye(s)
or any portion of blue in the eye(s), as well as both eyes not being of the same color shall
disqualify. Fully pigmented eye rims are desirable.

Rose ears, small, fine in texture; in repose, thrown back and folded along neck. Fold should
be maintained when at attention. Erect ears should be severely penalized.

Skull long and lean, fairly wide between the ears, scarcely perceptible stop.

Muzzle should be long and powerful, denoting great strength of bite, without coarseness.
Lack of underjaw should be strictly penalized. Nose leather to be entirely and uniformly
pigmented. Color to be black, dark blue or dark brown, both so dark so as to appear nearly black.

Teeth of upper jaw should fit closely over teeth of lower jaw creating a scissors bite. Teeth
should be white and strong. Undershot shall disqualify. Overshot one-quarter inch or more
shall disqualify.

Neck, Topline, Body

Neck long, clean and muscular, well arched with no suggestion of throatiness, widening
gracefully into the top of the shoulder. A short thick neck, or a ewe neck, should be penalized.
The back is broad, firm and well muscled, having length over the loin. The backline runs
smoothly from the withers with a graceful natural arch, not too accentuated, beginning over
the loin and carrying through over the croup; the arch is continuous without flatness. A dip
behind shoulder blades, wheelback, flat back, or a steep or flat croup should be penalized.
Brisket very deep, reaching as nearly as possible to the point of the elbow. Ribs well sprung
but with no suggestion of barrel shape. The space between the forelegs is filled in so that
there is no appearance of a hollow between them. There is a definite tuckup of the underline.
The tail long and tapering, reaching to at least the inside of the hock when measured down
along the hind leg. When the dog is in motion, the tail is carried low with only a gentle
upward curve; tail should not be carried higher than top of back.

Forequarters
Shoulder blade long, well laid back, with flat muscles, allowing for moderate space between
shoulder blades at peak of withers. Upper arm of equal length, placed so that the elbow falls
directly under the withers.

The points of the elbows should point neither in nor out, but straight back. A steep shoulder,
short upper arm, a heavily muscled or loaded shoulder, or a very narrow shoulder, all of
which restrict low free movement, should be strictly penalized. Forelegs straight, giving
appearance of strength and substance of bone. Pasterns strong, slightly bent and flexible.
Bowed legs, tied-in elbows, legs lacking substance, legs set far under the body so as to
create an exaggerated forechest, weak or upright pasterns should be strictly penalized.
Both front and rear feet must be well formed with hard, thick pads. Feet more hare than cat,
but both are acceptable. Flat, splayed or soft feet without thick hard pads should be strictly
penalized. Toes should be long, close and well arched. Nails strong and naturally short or of
moderate length. Dewclaws may be removed.

Hindquarters
Long and powerful. The thighs are broad and muscular, stifles well bent; muscles are long
and flat and carry well down toward the hock. The hocks are well let down and close to the
ground. Sickle or cow hocks should be strictly penalized.

Coat
Short, close, smooth and firm in texture. Any other coat shall be a disqualification. Old scars
and injuries, the result of work or accident, should not be allowed to prejudice the dog’s
chance in the show ring.

Color
Color immaterial.

Gait
Low, free moving and smooth, with reach in the forequarters and strong drive in the
hindquarters. The dog has great freedom of action when viewed from the side; the forelegs
move forward close to the ground to give a long, low reach; the hind legs have strong
propelling power. When moving and viewed from front or rear, legs should turn neither in
nor out, nor should feet cross or interfere with each other.

Lack of front reach or rear drive, or a short, hackney gait with high wrist action, should be
strictly penalized. Crossing in front or moving too close should be strictly penalized.

Temperament
Amiable, friendly, gentle, but capable of great intensity during sporting pursuits.

Disqualifications
More than one-half inch above or below stated height limits.
Blue eye(s), any portion of blue in the eye(s), eyes not of the same color.
Undershot.
Overshot one-quarter inch or more.
Any coat other than short, close, smooth and firm in texture.

Effective January 1, 2008

AKC Code of Sportsmanship

PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the
year of AKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles
of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation,
performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship
are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the
belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this
code is presented.

• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of
purebred dogs.
• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy,
and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.
• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the
sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration
into their decisions or behavior.
• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers
no other factors.
• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.
• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where
it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on
something other than the merits of the dogs.
• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a
judge.
• The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies
governing the sport of purebred dogs.
• Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent
and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of
competitors.
• Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.
• Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.
• Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the
strengths and weaknesses of his breeding stock.
• Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions
offered or bestowed upon them.
• Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.
• Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or
themselves while taking part in the sport.

In Memoriam

The American Whippet Club
again had to say goodbye
to some of our best in 2007.

This page is dedicated
to the memory of those people
and dogs that we lost this past year
that helped make this
wonderful breed what it is today.
Our thoughts are with sadness,
but also with joy for
the dedication they brought
to our breed.

God Speed
In Memoriam
The following pages
are in tribute to
outstanding
Whippet people
we've lost this past year.

These remembrances
express great sadness,
but also tell of the joy
they found in their dogs
and the dedication
they brought
to the breed.
